Services

Dr. Darwin Chen and his team specialize in hip and knee replacement, minimally invasive surgery, as well as complex and revision arthroplasty.
HIP PROCEDURES
Direct Anterior Approach Hip Replacement

The direct anterior approach (DAA) for total hip replacement is a muscle sparing, minimally invasive surgical technique. DAA aids in rapid recovery and improves implant positioning.

Mini-Incision Posterior Hip Replacement

The mini-posterior THA is a less invasive technique for hip replacement. This is a highly modified version of the traditional posterior approach, and the surgical outcomes rival DAA.

Hip Fracture Surgery (ORIF)

Dr. Chen frequently performs hip fracture surgery for femoral neck, intertrochanteric, and subtrochanteric hip fractures. These fractures are often treated with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) or total hip arthroplasty (THA) when appropriate.

Revision Hip Replacement

Orthopaedic surgeons from throughout the NYC Metro region often refer difficult/highly challenging revision cases to Dr. Chen for further management. Dr. Chen has vast experience in revision techniques for addressing extensive bone loss (acetabular and femoral), recalled implants, metal-on-metal failures, periprosthetic joint infections, and recurrent instability among other problems.

Complex Primary Total Hip Replacement

Dr. Chen has a particular interest in complex THA reconstructions for hip dysplasia and Perthes disease. He has developed novel techniques for acetabular deficiency using porous tantalum metal augments as well as the use of an intraoperative, handheld nerve stimulator to protect against sciatic nerve palsy.

KNEE PROCEDURES
Less Invasive Total Knee Replacement

Dr. Chen performs total knee replacement utilizing a smaller incision and less damage to the quadriceps muscle/tendon

Partial Knee Replacement

Dr. Chen performs outpatient partial knee replacement in select patients with arthritis isolated to one compartment of the knee. All ligaments in the knee are preserved and the recovery time is less than half of a total knee replacement. Most patients are back to normal in 2-4 weeks.

Revision Knee Replacement

Patients frequently consult Dr. Chen for revision surgery of a failed prior knee replacement. Reasons for revision TKA include infection, implant loosening, and stiffness.
